Ming-Po CAI is the Founder and President of Cathay Capital, the leading global investment firm created by Entrepreneurs for Entrepreneurs and an expert in creating value through cross-border investment across China, Europe and North America. Cathay Capital, founded by Ming-Po CAI with his business partner Edouard Moinet in 2006, is fully dedicated to helping its portfolio companies’ management teams to succeed beyond their original borders and to accelerate cross-border growth strategies. Cathay Capital’s team of nearly 90 – including 18 partners – is based in Shanghai, Beijing, Paris, Munich, New York, San Francisco, as well as in Tel Aviv, and leverages on Cathay’s unique business model and platform to connect local ecosystems on three continents.
Mr. CAI has more than 20 years of cross-border investment experience and deep expertise in developing China-entry strategies for multinational companies, and in globalization strategies for Chinese companies expanding internationally. Ming-Po Cai today sits on the Boards of several Cathay Capital’s portfolio companies.
Under Ming-Po CAI’s leadership, Cathay Capital has grown to more than EUR 2.5 billion in assets under management and has invested in more than 100 companies across three continents, including tens of star companies such as Suofeiya, Zbom, Meinian Onehealth, Moncler, Poten, Aihuishou, Jingrui, and startups like PDD, Momenta, Drivy, Ledger, Magmode, Shopal, Trifacta, Glovo, Owkin and Chime Bank. Cathay Capital has a range of fourteen funds in three series: smallcaps, midcaps and innovation. Cathay Capital focuses on industries including consumer goods, healthcare, advanced technologies, TMT and mobility, etc.
Ming-Po CAI is a member of the World Economic Forum and holds a Master degree in Management from EM Lyon in France. He is also graduated from China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai, China.
Before, he managed the international activities of the Orange/Publicis fund, based in San Francisco. He has been the Head of Corporate Venture at Orange Telecom, and a Managing Director at Innovacom Venture. He has also worked as an Officer at the French Treasury Department, in charge of all the Sovereign holdings in Aerospace, Defense, and Media companies.
Denis has pioneered a unique way to invest in technology, integrating the usual playbook of venture capital investing, but also leveraging his vision about the large social evolutions happening globally, taking into account the contribution towards sustainability from startups, analyzing the competitive landscape at a full global level, and integrating in the due diligence process the insights of numerous Fortune 500 companies committed in his ecosystem. He believes that this fosters deeper relationships with entrepreneurs from the start, and helps them to lead faster and further.
Denis has a technical background and started as a Researcher in the laboratories of Orange Telecom, working mainly on semiconductor quantum dots. He holds a Ph.D. in solid state Physics, is a graduate of Ecole Normale Supérieure, and is an engineer of Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Telecommunications.
Lanchun is a Managing Partner of Cathay Capital, she has nearly 20 years of experience in investment, consulting and trading service, holds a EMBA degree from CEIBS. She worked in PWC and Deloitte & Touch Corporate Finance, and was responsible for many large enterprises and investment fund M&A projects.
Lanchun joined Cathay Capital in 2010, brings her deep understanding of industry trends and investment direction, and lead the team to invest in several high quality investments, including Meinian Health (002044.SZ), Poten Environment (603603.SH), Pinduoduo (PDD.NYSE), Shenghuo Pharmaceutical, Righton Bio, Cabio, Soocas, Lumi, Ifchange, Magmode, Momenta, Meet You, Brass Master, UShopal and Arsmo, etc.
Jacky Abitbol works as a Partner of the Cathay Innovation fund within Cathay Capital. He benefits from over 17 years of advisory and operational experience in Telecommunications, Medias and Technology, with a particular expertise in venture capital and corporate development.
Prior to joining Cathay Capital, Jacky was a Venture Partner with Iris Capital in Israel from 2012 to 2015. In this role, he was responsible for identifying investment opportunities for Iris Capital and monitoring local portfolio companies.
In addition Jacky headed the Corporate Development activity for Orange startups program.
Before, he was Vice President for Corporate Development at Orange Digital from 2012 to 2013 and Investment Director at Orange Capital (now Iris Capital) from 2011 to 2012.
Previously, Jacky Abitbol was Business Development & Sales Director for the mobile division of SanDisk from 2006 to 2011 and worked as a Corporate and Business Development Director at GFI in Spain from 2003 to 2006.
He started his career as part of the management team of Fantine Group (now Aviv Ventures).
Jacky holds a MBA from Boston University and a degree in Business Administration from Madrid Business School.
Nicolas du Cray is a Partner at Cathay Capital, based in Singapore.
Prior to joining Cathay Capital in 2016, Nicolas was a Venture Partner at Iris Capital, a global venture capital investor sponsored by Orange and Publicis, in charge of the fund’s investments in China.
Prior to joining Iris Capital in 2012, Nicolas was an Investment Director at Orange Capital in Beijing, and prior to that, a Senior Project Manager at Orange Labs (Beijing), that he joined as a founding member in 2004. Prior to that, Nicolas worked for France Telecom’s Representative Office in Beijing.
Nicolas holds an Executive MBA from INSEAD and Tsinghua University, a Master of Science in ICT Management from EMLYON Business School & Centrale Lyon (France) and a Master of Science in Engineering from Grenoble Institute of Technology (France).
